Featured Books
So many moms have commented on how much they like the
books I've featured at the end of my TYKES classes, I
thought I should create a new section of my website
dedicated specifically to the books I've selected for each
6-week session.  My
Library includes lots of great books that
you can use that help in the practice of yoga or improve a
child's self-esteem.  There are so many wonderful children's
books to choose from; it's often hard to know where to
start.  I hope this helps just a little.

JANUARY - FEBRUARY SESSION

Week 8 -
My Daddy is a Pretzel by Baron Baptiste

An instant classic, this book incorporates yoga poses
throughout the quintessential question "What does your
Daddy do for work?"  In response to one child commenting
that her daddy is a pilot, the narrator expands on how
sometimes his daddy is a plane and then proceeds to explain
how to perform yoga's Warrior III pose.

Week 7 -
We're Different, We're the Same:  And We're All
Wonderful
by Sesame Street

Sesame Street more than any other show exemplifies how
peoples of all types can co-exist not just peacefully but
happily, too.  This book illustrates to children the
difference in our hair, skin, smiles, eyes, etc., but
emphasizes how all of those characteristics are similar among
all of us.

Week 6 -
Whoever you Are by Mem Fox

The amazing Mem Fox takes children on a journey around
the world to highlight the similarities of children
everywhere.  The underlying theme is that we all want to
spread and receive love "whoever you are, where ever you
all, all over the world."

Week 5 -
"I'm Not Cute!" by Johnathan Allen

All parents lament that children grow up too fast.  This is a
sweet story of Baby Owl who wants to be all grown up, but
little at the same time, a dilemma all children (and
grown-ups too!) have from time to time.

Week 4
- A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni

A timeless classic story of self-acceptance and true
friendship by Caldecott Award winner Leo Lionni, this is a
must-read for everyone.  A tiny chameleon struggles with the
fact that unlike all the other animals he encounters, he
does not have a color unique to him.  The struggle continues
until he meets another chameleon and even though they still
don't have their own color, they do have each other.

Week 3 -
The Listening Walk by Paul Showers and illustrator
Aliki

A father, a daughter and a dog go for a silent walk, noticing
the sounds in the world around us.  This book is a terrific
reminder for all of us to be mindful in our everyday routines;
things we do as routinely as walking the dog.  How often do
we miss the sounds of the birds singing, the lawn mower
whirring, or the click of shoes on pavement?  When we
finished the book, the kids paused and noticed the piano
playing on the CD, the sounds of cars passing by and the
faint buzzing of the lights.  Check this book out; then pause
to notice what you're missing as we rush through our hectic
days.

Week 2 -
Each Breath a Smile by Sister Susan.

Based on the words of Thich Nhat Hanh,
Each Breath a
Smile
is a sweet way to introduce young children to the
beauty everywhere that we can notice and better appreciate
when we quietly breathe and listen to the world around us.

Week 1 -
Peaceful Piggy Meditation by Kerry Lee MacLean

Now available in paperback, this delightful book introduces
children to the benefits of meditation and how this act can
transform us all into more peaceful piggies or people.
